About the Book:
The year is 2811. James, a crime consultant, has been roused out of bed by a phone call. The inspector wants him to report to Residential Quarter 8. There’s been a murder. The victim has suffered complete desanguination. When the inspector asks James for his thoughts he finds himself taking a sentimental journey that spans over 900 years.
Reader’s Notes:
Unlike many of the small press published books I find myself reading, “Vampire Detective in Space” #1 is not a book I found in a crowdfunding campaign. I found this one in the wild on the shelves of my local comic book store. Mind you, with Mr. Palmquist also living in a fifty-mile radius of me, it should not come as much of a surprise.
I usually don’t go out of my way to check out vampire stories. I don’t dislike them. The challenge I find with them is finding a story that hasn’t already been done. It’s no fun reading a story that’s predictable. The first installment of “Vampire Detective in Space” was up to the challenge.
This story makes us think of things from a different angle. What if vampires didn’t have a food source because all of the humans had died or moved off planet? Being immortal is it possible for them to die of starvation, or do they just go mad with hunger?
In addition to these questions, “Vampire Detective in Space” gives us a love story. Seeing a couple still wanting to be together after 600 years is impressive in a society where a couple being together for twenty years seems to be the new benchmark for uncommon longevity. I fully support anything that promotes the idea of love conquering all.
I like how the artwork is done on this cover. We get terrific line work and coloring. We get a before and after that shows us James’s life on Earth as well as his current situation. I appreciate that the cover is relevant to the story.
In addition to doing a banger of a job on the cover, Mr. Swartz’s work on the interior pages is rock solid. There is great attention to detail, I enjoyed the panels where James and company were looking to gain passage on the voyage.
As a geek on a budget, I would highly recommend “Vampire Detective in Space” #1. It has action. It has romance. It has drama. It’s a vampire story unlike anything you’ve ever read!
