Princess Peach: Showtime! for Nintendo Switch puts players in control of the titular heroine as she embarks on a mission to save a theater full of Theets from Grape and the Sour Bunch. With its clever, theatrical, and fun gameplay, the game offers a cinematic experience that is a perfect complement to the Luigi’s Mansion series.
Peach vs. the Sour Bunch
The adventure kicks off when Peach is invited to the Sparkle Theater, only to have things take a turn for the worse as the Sour Bunch seizes control of the entire theater. With the star performers captured and the shows corrupted, Peach must join forces with Stella, the guardian of the theater, and take on various roles by changing costumes to save the day. These roles include detective, pastry chef, and swordfighter, as highlighted in the game’s promotions.
The game’s controls are intuitive, with a control stick for navigation, a “jump” button, and an “action” button that can be swapped. With Peach’s various personas through costumes, the type of “action” she performs changes significantly from one scene to the next.
Showtime’s aesthetic is top-notch, with each level resembling a series of sets where players guide Peach from stage left to stage right. Each performance typically ends with an exciting climax, such as a chase scene or boss battle. The game cleverly maintains the fourth wall of the play, even when the sets represent an onstage performance, keeping the action within the context of the show.
Designed for all ages, Showtime strikes a balance between being challenging and accessible. The game offers charm and heartwarming moments to players, making it enjoyable for a wide range of players.
Theater Merch Table
While the game isn’t overly difficult to complete, achieving 100% completion and collecting all items can pose a challenge. Players can also partake in rehearsals after clearing all plays on a theater floor, setting difficult timed goals while Peach dons different costumes. This mode reminded me of the Pit of 100 Trials from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, offering a challenging gameplay experience.
Unlocking alternate outfits is a major incentive in the game, with Peach having an extensive wardrobe to discover. By rescuing certain Theets, exchanging coins at the merch table, and achieving gold medals in rehearsals, players can access a variety of modified dress patterns and colors, as well as alternate-colored ribbons for Stella.
Princess Peach: Showtime!
Similar to Luigi’s Mansion, Showtime shines the spotlight on a secondary character from the Mario universe, offering a bright, engaging, and fun gaming experience that is sure to captivate players from start to finish. The game’s vast array of alternate costumes adds to the enjoyment, making it a memorable and unique gaming experience that players will cherish.
Princess Peach: Showtime! is now available for players to enjoy.
