Peacock’s new Satanic Panic series Hysteria! follows a small town engulfed in fears of Satanists wreaking havoc, all traced back to a few kids’ love of heavy metal music. At the 2024 New York Comic Con last weekend, the show’s co-creator and executive producer discussed the importance of the soundtrack, revealing a song they were unable to use.
Streaming on Peacock, Hysteria! transports viewers back to the 1980s, highlighting the significance of metal music during that era. Despite parodying the Satanic Panic of the time, co-creator Matthew Scott Kane shared that a certain band declined to license their music for the pilot episode.
Why KISS is absent from Peacock’s Hysteria!
“During a scene with Dylan and Judith, we wanted to feature KISS’s ‘Beth,’ but the band’s strict policy prohibited us from using their music due to our Satanic comedy theme,” Kane explained at NYCC. “Although we lack KISS songs, we do incorporate some humorous references to the band in the series.”
Despite the absence of KISS, Hysteria! still captures the essence of metal music, featuring covers by the fictional band, Dethkrunch. Kane expressed satisfaction with the music selection for the show, promising viewers an enjoyable soundtrack throughout all eight episodes.
“Our goal was to create a diverse soundtrack that reflects the town’s story, not just the characters’,” Kane elaborated. “From Belinda Carlisle to ‘Valerie,’ we encompass a range of musical styles to enhance the narrative.”
All episodes of Hysteria! are now available for streaming exclusively on Peacock, with weekly airings on USA Network every Thursday night at 10:30 p.m. ET.
