While other statue companies have reduced their product offerings and increased prices in the post-pandemic collecting landscape, Diamond Select Toys has quietly established itself as the leader in affordable Marvel PVC statues with its successful Marvel Gallery series. Since its debut in 2016, this DST series has released numerous iconic comic and movie characters. This year, the Jim Lee X-Men sub-line has gained momentum, with the Marvel Gallery Rogue figure being one of the latest additions. Should you add this figure to your collection? Read on for my review.
Despite Rogue being one of the most popular female characters in the X-Men and the Marvel Universe, there is surprisingly a scarcity of Rogue statues in the market. Diamond Select Toys has only released one Rogue figure in their Gallery line, which featured a Savage Land Rogue in torn clothing. With other popular X-Men characters like Gambit, Beast, Cyclops, Magneto, Jubilee, Omega Red, and Psylocke already released or soon to be released in their recognizable 90s costumes, the time was right for Rogue to receive her own PVC figure.
Like all DST Gallery statues, Rogue comes in a cardboard window box that allows you to see the figure before purchase. The packaging is basic but features Rogue’s personal logo. Inside the box, the figure is securely held in a two-piece plastic container. The Marvel Gallery Rogue figure is priced at just under $60, making it an unbeatable value for a high-quality PVC statue of this size (approximately 1:8 scale).
This Rogue statue stands out from the rest of the Marvel Gallery lineup due to its horizontal orientation. Instead of the usual vertical pose, Rogue is depicted rushing forward with her feet firmly on the ground. This adds variety to a display of Gallery statues and breaks up the monotony. The base of the statue features a combination of rocky terrain and metal debris, providing a suitable backdrop for the figure.
Rogue is depicted in her iconic costume, complete with a green headband, brown jacket, yellow gloves, and her signature white streak in her brown hair. The sculpting detail on Rogue’s hair is impressive, and the paint deco and dry brushing techniques help bring out these details. The wavy texture of her hair has a nostalgic 80s/90s feel to it.
However, the design concept of this statue feels a bit off. The pose of Rogue running forward with her gloved hand outstretched doesn’t seem true to her character. It would have been more fitting to see her with the glove removed, ready to absorb an enemy’s power. Despite this minor flaw, the overall paint deco of the figure is satisfactory, considering its affordable price point.
In conclusion, while the size and weight of this Marvel Gallery Rogue PVC statue make it a great value for the price, it falls slightly short under closer scrutiny. The pose feels a bit off and doesn’t blend well with other Jim Lee X-Men statues. However, the sculpting and deco on Rogue’s hair are the standout features of this piece. If you’re a fan of Rogue and want to complete your Jim Lee X-Men statue collection, this affordable figure is worth considering.
